St. John’s United Church is blessed with many strong and gifted leaders who generously offer their gifts to the Community of Faith, the community in which we live and its surrounding area, to the Canadian Shield Region of which we are a part, to the National Church, and to the world.
Our Official Board consists of our Pastoral Charge Supervisor, our Minister (vacant), and church members elected at our AGM. We meet monthly, except during the summer, and limit our meetings to 1.5 hours, recognizing that stewardship of our energy and time are important to us. Our discussions are thorough and our decisions are made by consensus. Some members of the Official Board are also members of various committees, although there is no requirement that they chair those committees.

Our Worship Committee gathers to discuss weekly worship as well as special services during the year. Responsibilities include making sure there is worship leadership when the minister is away and encouraging congregation members to participate in leading different parts of our service. The worship committee acts as a ‘sounding board’ for the minister when she wants to try something different. As well, the Worship Committee organizes greeters, coffee/snack time, Communion volunteers, and readers for Sunday morning worship.
The Tech Team keeps us online! They run our audio and visuals on Sunday mornings and for specialty services. They are in-charge of livestreaming, powerpoint presentation, as well as our sound and lights. They are always looking for new members, no previous experience required!
Minister of Space is an important position in our church! This person(s) is/are responsible for the schedule of what is happening in the church, as well as outside events. They keep track of the calendar, look after the Property, make sure that the church is clean, and the elevator is working – among other duties. As a church we offer the use of our building freely to the community as an expression of our hospitality and welcome.
Our Minister of Space is Kim Walsh, with assistance from Carl Johnson (our Property Guy).
Our Ministry and Personnel Committee (known as M&P) is required by the United Church of Canada. M&P supports and supervises church staff, and responds to any complaints from the community or staff. (If you have a complaint about church staff it can be submitted in writing to the chair of M&P, Pearl Giuliano.)
The Finance Committee oversees our church finances, including bookkeeping, our budget and donations. They ensure we're in compliance with government legislation and procedures, and
with United Church policies regarding financial matters.
Our Finance Committee includes Joy Bott, George Bott and Becky Johnson.
The election of Trustees at AGMs is required by the United Church of Canada. Trustees hold all congregational property as the legal owners, which means they are listed as the owners on title documents for land and other kinds of congregational property (like investments).
Our current Trustees are Joe McGill and Carol Stadey.
St. John's United Church has four trained Licensed Lay Worship Leaders ready to help with the Worship in any way possible at St. John's and in the Canadian Shield Region. Education that includes the study of Liturgy, Preaching models, Prayer writing as well as personal Spiritual Formation and the background of the seasons of the church year has been undertaken by each. They are pictured here at their recognition ritual with past Moderator the Very Reverend David Giuliano.
St. John's United Church congregation recognizes and supports the gifts that each member of the congregation holds and endeavours to challenge all to use those gifts in our Community of Faith and outside it.
