Lauren & Sarah show off a youth kit
One of our youth kits
In Ontario we returned to two weeks of virtual learning, and I have heard from our community, folks are not happy! There are a number of teachers in our faith community at St. John's and so we have heard of the struggles that teachers, parents, and students have been facing. We are grieving with our community this loss of routine and connection.
One way that our youth responded was by working on Virtual Learning Survival Kits for their fellow students in need. As one youth put it, "[These supplies] are what people usually rely on the teachers to borrow and might not have at home." Another comment that "All grades will need paper, pencils," and worried that many wouldn't have these items available at home.
Last week two of youth packed 7 Virtual Learning Survival Kits to youth in need are to be distributed through Marjorie House, and two more collected items for the 15 kits for elementary students in the works that are being put together this week.
This is a project our youth really fleshed out and put together, with a little guidance from me. But I truly see myself as just the coordinator. I am so inspired by how thoughtful they have been in responding to their peers needs, and their excitement at having an opportunity to give back to their community.
It is a wonderful reminder that youth ministry is the ministry of youth, as much as it is a faith community's ministry to.
So, a big thank you to Tanna, Cora, Lauren and Sarah for their ministry, and the compassionate they have for their peers.
One of the things our kits included was resources for students and parents.
